WORMERIES
SUBSIDISED WORMERIES FOR SCHOOLS AND EDUCATIONAL GROUPS
Wormeries do the same job as compost bins by turning kitchen vegetable waste into rich, nutritious compost which is ideal for flowers and plants. Wormeries produce both a solid compost (vermicast) and a concentrated liquid fertiliser. In a wormery, the composting process is 'worm assisted'. Composting worms (e.g. tiger worms) live within a sealed unit or container, which provides them with a safe, protected environment and also stops them from escaping!
The Department of Local Government and the Environment (DLGE) offers subsidised Can-o-Worms wormeries to schools and other groups involved in educational activities. The Can-0-Worms (Value Packs) are purchased from Wiggly Wigglers and usually retail at £99. Through our subsidy scheme, the DLGE makes these wormeries available to schools for only £25 and as a result, we have put a number of units into Primary schools across the Island. Many pupils and staff are now composting their apple cores, banana skins and teabags from break times to make compost for the school gardens.
WORMERIES FOR HOUSEHOLDERS
Members of the public can buy their own wormeries directly from Wiggly Wigglers or from a number of other companies including Worm City, Original Organics , Green Gardener & The Bin Company . Please note that retail prices apply. Alternatively, keen gardeners may wish to make their own DIY Wormery and simply buy the composting worms direct from one of the composting companies, to add to the DIY wormery when it's ready for residents!.
WORMERY TOP TIP
Wormeries work best when used in conjunction with a compost bin. Compost bins are great for bulky garden waste such as leaves, grass cuttings, cardboard and cut flowers whereas wormeries are perfect for vegetable-based kitchen waste such teabags, coffee grounds, egg cartons, pet hair, non-acidic fruit waste (e.g. banana skins; apple cores) and vegetable peelings.
