What can we Recycle?

The drop down list will provide information on what can be recycled on the Isle of Man. Other recycling options are being developed and you can read about these on the 'What's in the pipeline' page.

There is no public service for recycling plastics. There are several reasons for this:

- as an oil based product energy can be recovered from plastic materials in the incineration process. The EfW generates electricity which is fed directly into the national grid, displacing the need to import fossil fuels to power stations.

- there are over 50 types of plastic, and one item can contain a mixture of many types (an ordinary drinks bottle for example). For effective recycling different types of plastic need to be separated, which an extremely time consuming and expensive process.

- much of the plastic waste produced in local markets in the UK are exported to Asia for recycling. When the impact of transportation is considered, energy recover on island is considered a more sustainable option.
