WHAT'S NEW?
GOOD NEWS! FORTNIGHTLY KERBSIDE RECYCLING COLLECTIONS HAVE COMMENCED IN BRADDAN, ONCHAN & DOUGLAS
Fortnightly kerbside recycling collections have now begun in Braddan, Onchan & Douglas as part of the DLGE's brand new recycling initiative. The scheme is being delivered in partnership with Douglas Corporation, Onchan District Commissioners and Braddan Parish Commissioners with recycling collections for almost 15,000 households beginning on 3rd November. Householders are being encouraged to 'get into the recycling habit' and use the scheme to recycle their paper, glass bottles and jars, food and drinks cans and plastic bottles, from the convenience of their homes.
Please click on the document at the top of this page to access the comprehensive "Kerbside Collection Scheme - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)" guide. It provides lots of answers to FAQ's and also gives helpful information on how to use the blue & green kerbside box scheme.

Prior to the first collections, householders received two 55 litre 'kerbside' boxes (shown above) during weeks commencing 20th & 27th October 2008, to collect their paper, glass bottles and jars, food and drinks cans and plastic bottles in a brand new recycling scheme designed to make recycling easier for householders.
Householders also received an information leaflet, collection calendar and fridge magnet with their boxes.A blue box with showerproof cover is provided for paper (e.g. newspapers, glossy magazines and junk mail). The showerproof cover is intended to stop the paper from getting wet.
A green box with elasticated net cover is provided for glass, bottles & jars; food & drinks cans; plastic bottles. The net cover will keep the box contents in place and stop the plastic bottles from blowing away.
These recycling boxes will be collected on a fortnightly basis with NO CHANGE TO HOUSEHOLD RUBBISH COLLECTIONS (i.e. households should put their wheelie bin out for collection as normal). Residents included in the Scheme have been provided with advice and instructions on how to use their recycling boxes, a household collection calendar and a dedicated helpline number in case they have any queries or concerns.
The Scheme is being delivered over the next three years as a partnership working between officers and political members from the Department of Local Government & the Environment, Braddan Parish Commissioners, Onchan District Commissioners and Douglas Corporation.

BATTERY RECYCLING SCHEME IS A HUGE SUCCESS. EXPANSION NOW PLANNED
Our new recycling scheme for dry-cell batteries began in June 2005 and to date (Nov '08) we have collected over 11.1 tonnes of batteries. This an excellent achievement and equates to approximately 533,520 'AA' batteries, which is over HALF A MILLION!
What do we collect?
We collect single use (disposable) and rechargeable batteries used in items such as torches, cameras, electronic games, computers, hearing aids and power tools.
Where do we collect them?
Working with Manx Co-op stores, Glen Mona Garage & Stores and all four Civic Amenity Sites, we provide collection points throughout the Island. The batteries are shipped off-Island by a local company, J Costain, Scrap Metal Merchants, and sent to G&P Batteries in the West Midlands for sorting and onward recycling.
Could we have more collection points?
Yes - we are now working with other local retail outlets across the Island to provide additional battery collection points as we would like to make it even easier for the public to reach a local recycling point.
We also provide a battery recycling service for the Island's secondary schools. We are now working to progress this service to include many of the Island's Primary Schools, as we'd like help more Primary pupils and teachers to get into the recycling habit by bringing in their batteries from home.
