What happens to our waste?

All household refuse (waste) either in wheelie bins, bin bags or from the Civic Amenity sites, including school waste and street bin waste, is taken to the Energy from Waste Plant (EfW) at Richmond Hill where it is burned at high temperatures. Combustible waste from the commercial or industrial sector is also taken to the EfW. The heat is used to produce electricity.

Some difficult wastes are shipped off island for specialist disposal, with permission of the UK waste regulation authority. General waste materials that cannot be burned on Island (such as asbestos, or plasterboard) are sent to landfill sites for disposal.

What Could Happen to our Waste?

A survey into Public Perception and Participation in Recycling carried out summer (August 2004) indicated that over 90% of those surveyed currently recycle. The survey also found some interesting facts about attitudes to kerbside collection and household waste charging. For the full report please download the document below.
