What happens to our waste?

All household waste (either in wheelie bins, bin bags or Civic Amenity site waste), including school waste and street bin waste, is taken to the Energy from Waste Plant at Richmond Hill where it is burned at high temperatures. The heat is used to produce electricity. Waste that cannot be burned (such as asbestos) is sent to the landfill site at the Point of Ayre where it is tipped and buried.

Waste from the commercial or industrial sector that is not reused or recycled, and can be burned, is also taken to the EfW.

What Could Happen to our Waste?

A survey into Public Perception and Participation in Recycling carried out summer (August 2004) indicated that over 90% of those surveyed currently recycle. The survey also found some interesting facts about attitudes to kerbside collection and household waste charging. For the full report please download the document below.
