How much waste do we make each year?
Households on the Island produce about 1000kg (1 tonne) of waste each year (roughly about the same weight as a small car) although some throw away nearly twice that amount. Every year we are making more and more waste, with household waste increasing on average by 3% per annum.
The 2000 Waste Management Plan* indicates the Island makes about 40,000 tonnes of household waste, with a further 70,000 tonnes of waste produced from shops, offices, hotels, schools, hospitals, farms, and other manufacturing and industrial sectors.
